Hilton Hires Back

January 5, 2009 on 9:25 am | In Finance | 4 Comments

I’ve been hesitant to say anything, but last month I received a letter from Hilton Reservations and Customer Care saying they were hoping to be rehiring trainees in January or February.  If I was interested in returning to Hilton, I simply needed to send them an email stating so.

Well, I sent them my email saying yes of course I was interested and the very next day I received an email reply giving me my rehire date!  I am scheduled to go into the office day after tomorrow to complete rehire paperwork and then I will start my final 3 weeks of training next Monday, one week from today.

I’ve really been nervous about saying anything because it seems that the economy is certainly not getting any better and I keep waiting for Hilton to say they’ve made a mistake.  Then again, perhaps they’ve simply had a reduction in work force due to people voluntarily leaving the company and they need to hire replacements.  Either way, I’m in the first class to be called back.  I will be very interested to see what other familiar faces are in my class and which ones opted not to return.

Wish me luck!

Sign of a Failing Economy

Four weeks ago I was hired as a reservation specialist for a major hotel firm.  This position required me to complete 7 weeks of on-site training after which, I would work part time from home as a reservation specialist.  (I would make or change hotel reservations).

Today was the beginning of our 4th week of training and next week we would have been put on the phones with live calls.

This afternoon, a mere 1 hour ago, our entire class of 26 was laid off.  The same happened to a class that began earlier in the day and the same will happen to the next 2 classes to come in today.  This lay off will affect over 80 people at this one location.  There are additional classes at locations around the country who are also being let go.

This is truly a sign of our economy.  People just aren’t traveling, whether it’s for business or personal, it’s not happening.

For now, the only thing I can do is hope that in January, I will get called back.  This really was going to be a great job and I hope I do hear back.  In the mean time, it’s going to be a very lean Christmas

New Job

September 16, 2008 on 9:05 pm | In Finance | 3 Comments

I’ve done it.  I’ve gone out and gotten myself a job.  I had thought I would do this after the holidays, but this position came to my attention and I decided to give it a shot.

I will be attending a 6 hour orientation tomorrow, then a 7 week in house training that starts Monday.  Once I’ve completed the 7 weeks, I will be working from home.  I’m not nervous about the job itself, or about working from home.  I am nervous about the technology end of it.  I have to install a couple of pieces of equipment to my computer and internet in order to work from home. The equipment is provided by the employer, but I have to do the installation.  I’m not very good with that sort of thing, so I am nervous about it.

Anyway, hopefully they provide us with detailed instructions on how to get up and running from home and everything will work itself out.  Wish me luck!

Top Secret

Okay, I’m trying to keep this quiet, but I’m excited and nervous at the same time and I thought maybe writing it down would help me to calm down.

Here’s the deal.  I’m going for a job interview tomorrow!  It’s sort of odd because my husband and I were just talking last week about the fact that after the new year, I’d probably try to find a part time job to help pay off some bills.  I was thinking of going to Target or some place like that.

Then, while blog hopping, I ran across a “work at home” opportunity that really caught my attention.  This is a legitimate opportunity with a major (well known) corporation.  If hired, I will receive 7 weeks of paid training and then work from home 20 hours per week.  I submitted my online application yesterday and received an email this afternoon inviting me to a testing/interview session tomorrow!

I know I’m qualified for the position, I’m not worried about that. I am nervous though that it will turn out to be something I don’t like.  It’s pretty simple and I really want it to work.  It would also allow me to stay home and keep working on my sewing projects.  I’m looking forward to finding out more information tomorrow and seeing where this might lead.  The only person I’ve even told any of this to is my husband, I don’t want to jinx it!

So, wish me luck!

I’ve Got a New Job

February 27, 2008 on 7:17 pm | In Some of This Some of That | 3 Comments

I really wasn’t wanting to find a job outside the home and I wasn’t looking for one, but it’s happened, I’ve got a new job.

My daughter’s guitar teacher needed an assistant to do his office work. He previously had one of his high school age students working for him, but the kid quit last week. We sort of discussed it that very day, but I wanted to give the instructor time to really think about who he wanted working for me. Plus, I didn’t know if the kid had just had a bad day and would be coming back, or if he’d decided to go out and get a job in trucking or something else.

When I took my daughter in for her lesson yesterday, he asked me again, this time with a real seriousness. We decided to try to get together when he didn’t have a student and talk about the possibility. My biggest issue is that I have mornings available, but, as an artist, his day usually doesn’t start until 1:00 P.M. My afternoons get really busy from the time I pick my daughter up from school until we go to bed. So we have a bit of a conflicting schedule.

I did meet with him today and he basically put me to work. He really just wants me to work up to 20 hours per week, Monday - Thursday. I think he finally understood how busy my afternoons are though and as I was running out the door to go to my Destination Imagination meeting, he commented that perhaps, once I get the hang of things, I could do my work in the mornings. For the most part we don’t have to be in the studio at the same time.

This could turn out to be the perfect job for me! The job is mine if I want it, I just have to let him know.
