I wish all of my U.S. friends and family a very happy Thanksgiving.

We are having a quiet celebration of thanks here in our home with just the 3 of us.  I had to work this morning and now have a nice plump turkey in the oven which we will eat for dinner after while.  I have expanded our normal Thanksgiving day menu to include a few items I’ve never made before including roasted brussell sprouts and a butternut squash dressing.

Fact is, I had so many menu items I wanted to make that I am going to make a couple items over the next few days for us to eat along with our left over turkey!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Online Shopping for Back to School

August 22, 2009 on 9:17 am | In Family | Comments Off

I took my daughter and her friend to the mall a couple of days ago so they could shop for clothes for back to school. School here in North Texas starts this coming Monday and my daughter feels she doesn’t have a thing to wear, even though we’ve been shopping, and shopping, and shopping… well, you get the picture. This last trip to the mall was exhausting, even though I spent most of the 4 hours sitting, waiting it out. My daughter was disappointed with what she found though and wound up only purchasing a few shirts, still feeling like she has nothing to wear.

This morning, I’m going to introduce my daughter to Zappos.com because I really think she could find just about anything she would like for back to school clothing. She can shop Burton to find tops, bottoms and everything in between. I know that one of the most difficult items she’s been searching for is a tote bag. She’s going into 8th grade and doesn’t want a typical backpack. Last year she used a satchel and this year she wants a simple tote bag. We’ve actually purchased two, returned one and one is still sitting there as a possibility. The one she kept will work, but it’s not exactly what she was looking for. So, I definitely want her to look online before she makes her final decision.

I feel confident in purchasing from Zappos.com because the offer free shipping, including the shipping to return an item and they have a 365 day return policy. Burton is a quality sportswear and sports equipment company powered by Zappos.com.

Do your kids have everything they need for back to school?

Frustration and Venting

June 28, 2009 on 8:02 pm | In Family | Comments Off

I’m sorry, I just have to vent.  If you prefer to not hear about what I’m thinking and feeling right now, you may wish to move along.

My nephew is getting married on July 11 and it’s a wedding that has been in the planning stages for about a year and a half.  We are all very happy for him and, because we’ve known for so long when the wedding date was, we of course have planned to attend.  Unfortunately, things are more complicated for us because we relocated to Texas which means we have farther to travel to get to the wedding.  It used to be a simple 2 1/2 hour drive, now it’s about 15 hours.  Yes, we could fly, but, for a family of 3, that becomes very expensive.  Plus, my daughter has seriously been missing her friends back in the Chicago area since we moved and we promised her that she would get to visit them.

So, the plan has been in place for a long time that we would drive from Texas to my mom’s house in Indiana.  That is roughly 15 hours and my husband wants to do it in one day.  The wedding is on Saturday in Indianapolis and my husband doesn’t understand why we are driving to my mom’s which is an hour and a half north of Indy, only to turn around the next day to drive back to Indy.  I guess I don’t know why I have to have a reason, it’s my mom and I want to go there.  Plus, I don’t want to arrive the same day of the wedding and risk being late.  We do have to have time to get dressed and cleaned up, I don’t want to show up in clothes I’ve been wearing all day in the car.

So, he’s all pissy.

To continue our trip, we will be spending Saturday night after the wedding reception, at a hotel along with many other guests of the wedding including both of my sisters and my mom.   Then, on Sunday, we will drive back to my mom’s and stay there for 2 nights.  On Tuesday, we will drive the 2 1/2 hours over to the Chicago area where I have hotel reservations for us for 2 nights.  The purpose of this portion of the trip was to allow my daughter to spend time with her friends.  Unfortunately, my husband has decided that we also need to add in visiting his sisters who live 45 minutes north of where we are going.  I don’t really have a problem with that, but, he screwing up my daughter’s plans.  Plus, he wants to get up at the crack of dawn on Thursday to drive all the way back home, another 15 hour drive.

So, he’s all pissy.

My daughter finally asked me why he has to make it all so complicated and I too would like to know why he always has to be so crabby when we try to do something family related.  I have not been to my mom’s house in at least 4 years.  I have seen my mom in other places, including her visiting us here in Texas, but I haven’t been to Indiana at all.  I get frustrated because I don’t know why he can’t just go with the flow.

I didn’t surprise him with this trip, it’s been planned for nearly 6 months and he’s known for a year and a half that we would be attending the wedding.  I’m finding it difficult to be excited about the trip because the only thing he does is wine and complain about it, he’s so inconvenienced… and pissy.

I apoligize to my readers, I’m just frustrated.  Something so easy has become so tension filled and frustrating.  I wish I knew how to please him or, I wish he’d just stay home.

Our Dreams of a Log Cabin in the Woods

January 5, 2009 on 9:13 pm | In Family, travel | 1 Comment

My husband and I have always dreamed of having our very own log cabin in the woods. It would be someplace that is easy enough to get too and yet completely private. The location would include a beautiful river where the fishing is good and the treasure hunting (as my daughter has always call scavenging) would be plentiful. In fact, the Skagit Valley of Washington State where my parents used to own property would be perfect, although, a little far from Dallas!

Seriously though, we’ve always thought it would be awesome to have our own little place in the woods. I was recently looking around online at log cabins and discovered The Timberworks Garden Company, located in the UK, that has a great selection of log cabins. Not only will they ship your choice of cabin to anywhere on the mainland UK, but, if you so choose, they’ll even set it up for you.

Think about all the variety of uses for a log cabin. Yes, it can be the dream getaway place in the woods, but it could also be your workshop located on your back lot. Or, maybe you’ve been wishing for a place for all the exercise equipment you got for Christmas? How about a cute cabin in your back yard? I could use one in our back yard to have my very own private sewing area. I would absolutely love that!

For now, I’m just going to keep dreaming of my log cabin in the woods, or, my new sewing room which is sounding better and better the more I say it! :-D

Affordable Tutoring Services

December 27, 2008 on 9:38 am | In Family | Comments Off

Standards in schools are being raised and students must keep up. Here in Texas, state wide exams must be passed in order to be promoted into the next grade level and even to graduate from high school. For many kids, this can be overwhelming and very stressful. To prepare for testing and even day to day studies, tutoring can help.

If a Tutor is what your student needs, check out Club-Z tutoring services. They offer in-home, one-on-one tutoring at a reasonable fee and they’ve helped over 100,000 students raise their grades and test scores. Visit www.clubztutoring.com for more information.

Wordless Wednesday – Happy Holidays!

It’s hard to believe that we’ve owned this very same tree for over 10 years! We paid $99 for it, which, at the time seemed like an awful lot of money, but it’s paid for itself many times over. Today you can’t find a tree of that size for that price. I think I’d like to add some red ribbon to it for next year.
