I love this video! I received it in an email from my sister and really enjoyed watching it. Thought I’d share it with you and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did during this frantic holiday season! What a nice surprise this must have been for those weary shoppers in the food court.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Learning to Quilt

I attended this year’s International Quilt Festival along with my sisters and mom. We had so much fun! We did take one class and the subject was free motion machine quilting. I really learned a lot! I’ve been piecing fabrics together for a number of years, but when it came to finishing a quilt, I wasn’t too sure what to do. Now I think I can finish a few of those projects that are waiting in my closet!

There are several steps involved in quilting, the first major step (after buying the fabric) is piecing. This is where all those cut pieces of fabric are sewn together following some sort of pattern. These pieces come together to form the “top”. Then it is time to put the layers together. We start with a piece of fabric that is at least as large as the finished top, laying it wrong side up. On top of that we place a layer of batting, I typically use cotton, I like the way it washes. On top of those 2 layers, we place the finished top. After making sure there are absolutely no wrinkles or puffs, the 3 layers get pinned together.

Normally, this is where I would pretty much stop and send my project to my mom to have her quilt it! Now, I will be able to finish my own projects!

The final step is the actual quilting, sewing the layers together. My mom does this by hand. something I have yet to learn how to do. I have now learned to do it on my sewing machine and have my first official project, a table runner, pinned and ready to be quilted. I am going to some practicing over the next couple of days on some scrap fabrics, but then I will do the real thing. I can’t wait! I feel very positive about it with my new found knowledge!

Floor Cleaning

November 12, 2010 on 4:13 pm | In Family | Comments Off

It’s that time of year, company is coming (mine came and went all ready) and the house needs to be put in order. We all do the regular every day cleaning, but when company is coming to stay, we want everything to be extra clean. I know I just finished cleaning every baseboard in my house, all the shower tiles and grout, and even scrubbed and reorganized my pantry! The one thing that I did wish I had time to get done was getting the carpets cleaned. Our carpets are so old, cleaning them can really help them look better than they really are. Unfortunately, I just didn’t have time to get it done.

I would like to really be able to compare carpet cleaning services austin before having a company come out. I don’t like just picking any random company out of the phone book. I have used a company in the past and was very pleased, but I do still like to compare. While I’m at it, I should check into the cost of rug cleaning austin because I do believe there have been a few puppy accidents on my good rug! I try my best to clean them up as soon as they happen, but sometimes those little dogs are sneaky and I don’t see what they’ve done.

One thing I’ve yet to get done since moving into our house 3 years ago is getting the air ducts cleaned. I would like to compare the cost of air duct cleaning austin but it’s not easy because there are different techniques used and I’m not sure which is the best. I just know I don’t want to be breathing all the crap that seems to be accumulating in those ducts!

Do you do price comparisons before you hire a cleaning contractor?

Time Off

November 12, 2010 on 3:59 pm | In Family | Comments Off

So, I took some time off from pretty much everything!

Actually, my sister & mom came into town and we spent a couple of days hanging out and visiting local quilt shops.  We then drove to Houston for the 2010 International Quilt Festival where we had so much fun, it’s taken me most of this week to recover!  I’ve also started on of several projects that I purchased while I was at the festival, a Christmas table topper.  I’m anxious to complete it so have spent much less time on the computer and much more time sewing!

I will be gone all weekend, tonight is the first football playoff game for high school, and Saturday & Sunday we’ll be at a softball tournament.  I’m hoping that around midnight tonight it starts to rain and the tournament gets canceled!  I’d much rather stay home and sew!  :-D
