Homecoming Mum

In case you weren’t able to judge the size of this ginormous Homecoming mum from my previous post, here is a shot of my daughter wearing it. She is about 5’5″ tall and the thing hung from her neck by a lanyard and actually touched the top of her feet. This is absolutely insane and something I can only imagine happening in Texas (at least, I hope it only happens in Texas!) where they think everything has to be as large as the state itself!  Seriously, if you’ve never been to Texas, just take a look at an atlas and see how big this state really is!  After all, it’s not Mesa Arizona real estate we’re talking about here! As much as I love Arizona and all its natural wonders, the size of Arizona doesn’t even come close to the area the state of Texas covers. It’s really very much like this Homecoming mum, it is HUGE!

If you’ve ever driven across the state of Texas then you really do know what I’m talking about! My mom makes that drive about twice each year because she winters in Arizona and summers in the upper Midwest. It can truly take a minimum of a day and a half just to get through Texas and it can be a very long, boring drive! I’m thinking I may drive out to Arizona with her in a couple of weeks. She is heading here with my sister and we’re all going to the Quilt Festival in Houston. Following that event, my mom plans on continuing on to Arizona. I hate the fact that she makes that drive by herself, and I’ve all ready taken the week off, so I may just join her. Of course, that means I would have to get a cheap one way airline ticket back, but, who knows!

Tell me, do you like driving cross country?  and, what do your homecoming mums look like?

Texas Size Mums

October 11, 2010 on 1:22 pm | In Family | Comments Off

Homecoming around the country comes every fall and along with it are many traditions. Here in Texas, it seems that floral designers set out to prove once again that everything is bigger in Texas, including the traditional Homecoming Mum!

My daughter is a freshman this year and this is a photo of the mum her boyfriend gave her. We had to have her wear it strapped to a lanyard around her neck. The ribbons are so long that they just about touched the ground and she had to be careful so she wouldn’t trip on it! It’s CRAZY!
