Homework Helper
November 29, 2008 on 7:23 pm | In Family | Comments OffHere we are, enjoying our final two days of vacation. We arrived home from California late last night after a wonderful visit with my daughter-in-law and her family, including our beautiful grand daughter. We had so much fun, and we didn’t even do anything except sit around the house together. The key was that we were together.
Now we’re home and we’ve spent almost the entire day working on a homework project for my daughter’s 7th grade reading class. She has to make a large poster/collage that represents her name and personality traits as determined by an earlier project that was completed in class. So, my husband and I have spent all day clipping pictures from catalogs while she got photos off the internet. She also had to draw a few. Now we’re just having to fill in and then she just has to glue them down.
I really wanted to spend today catching up on some computer work since I had no internet while we were gone. Guess I’ll have to do that tomorrow. Why is it that teachers assign homework over a week long break?

Happy Thanksgiving
November 25, 2008 on 9:59 pm | In Blogging | Comments OffI would like to just take a moment to wish my few readers a very Happy Thanksgiving!
I am currently on holiday in California and am spending time with family. I hope you also get to be with your family and get to enjoy some downtime. I feel fortunate that we all have our health and are able, even with the economy in the condition it is in, to still be together.
God Bless you all!
The Season of Giving
November 22, 2008 on 8:38 am | In Family, Finance | Comments OffWith the economy the way it is, many of us find ourselves cutting back on things that affect our household budgets. This time of year remains, however, the Season of Giving and a time of charity. There are almost daily reminders arriving in the mailbox of worthwhile charities, save the planet, save the animals, save the children. It is up to us to find something we are passionate about and lend our help. With that in mind, I hope you will read the following press release and visit Christmas For Payatas, watch the YouTube video on their site, and consider helping the children of Payatas, Philippines who are living in absolutely deplorable conditions.
The landfill in Payatas, The Philippines, is notoriously known the world over as Smokey Mountain. For over 35 years, the smoking dump site has grown to become a stark and heart-tugging reminder of the desperate onditions of humanity.
On a daily basis, children pick through newly arrived garbage to
collect material to sell. The earnings made by one child are not enough to even buy food for the day. Hence, entire families are forced to climb the mountain each day, hoping to earn enough to feed everyone. Children as young as four years old are forced to work in this daily struggle for survival.
In response to the plight of these children, Totedaddy.com is working with Lighthouse Center For Children Foundation to bring a little cheer to the children this Christmas.
Totedaddy.com has kicked off with a cash sponsorship of USD 10,000 to enable the children to celebrate Christmas. FusionExcel International has also pitched in a USD 5,000 in cash sponsorship. The money raised
will help fund the projects already in place, and help fund additional projects aimed at providing better housing, and a means of livelihood for the Payatas community.
It is hoped that by creating better awareness to the plight of these children, more support can be garnered towards their betterment. Together we can bury poverty!

Softball Tournament – Keller Texas
November 16, 2008 on 11:22 am | In Family | Comments OffThe alarm went off at 5 a.m. yesterday, Saturday, and our day began. Do you know just how hard it is to get up at 5 a.m. on a Saturday?! After getting dressed and getting everything loaded into the van, we were off to Keller, Texas and a day filled with nothing but fastpitch softball. Somehow, my daughter’s team is somewhat unlucky in the draw and seems to always get assigned to the first game of the morning, 8 a.m. Since it was a 75 minute drive from our house, and she needed to be their 45 minutes before game time for warm ups, we had to get out of our nice warm beds at 5 a.m.
I had directions from both Google and Mapquest (amazing how they don’t send you the same direction), and for some reason, we left our TomTom in the drawer at home. Thankfully, we only had to make 3 u-turns before arriving at the sports complex. We had been told that it was located in the middle of nowhere, but it turned out to be a nice area with plenty of shops and restaurants.
The 8 a.m game was horrible. The temperature was 40 degrees with high winds and it was just starting to get light out. The girls were all very cold and had trouble making plays and getting their bats around to the ball. They wound up losing and it was a game to forget, right away. The next game was at 10:20 and was better. It was slightly warmer, 45, but still quite windy. Having the sun up was a plus though and the girls seemed to be more awake. They made some good plays and managed to win, boosting their spirits.
At 1:00, they played their third game during the warmest part of the day. I think it may have reached 50 and the winds were a bit calmer. A few of the girls even played without their sweats and hats on. They played a team that was very experienced and older, a team that should have been playing in an older age tournament. Amazingly though, our girls held their own and it was a very close game, one of the best I’ve seen our girls play. Had it not been for some bad throws and a couple of missed catches, they could have won. In the end, they lost 7-4, but were pleased with their performance.
The final game was against a team that they’ve played against several time. This team has come to represent everything that is bad on sports, unsportsmanlike conduct form not just the coaches, but the players themselves. They are cocky and rude, even calling our players names. I look forward to the day when our girls can be victorious over them, but, unfortunately, it was not to be last night.
Our day ended with 1 win and 3 losses, but I saw great things from our team. This was only the 2nd tournament for them to participate in together, they have used these as growth experiences and it shows. They have one more tournament in a couple of weeks and then will take some time off before regrouping in February. I do believe that once they get a few kinks worked out that they will be a strong team and even more enjoyable to watch, win or lose.
Vehicle Maintenance and Car Repairs
November 13, 2008 on 9:02 pm | In Some of This Some of That | Comments OffOur van is 8 years old and we have done an excellent job of keeping up with the regular maintenance. The van looks almost new. There are a few very small dings from car doors, and a scratch on the back end where my husband backed into a tree in Custer State Park, South Dakota, but overall, it’s in excellent condition.
I feel very fortunate that we haven’t had a need for a car repair shop, although, there are some things inside, loose screws etc., that I wouldn’t mind having taken care of to stop the rattles. For now though, we’re just going to keep things the way they are. With a good wash it will shine like new, after all, we don’t have plans on buying a new one anytime soon.
Flourescent Light Bulbs
November 13, 2008 on 4:29 pm | In Some of This Some of That | Comments Off
I can’t believe it, but today I purchased the first flourescent bulbs I’ve ever purchased. You see, while I’ve been replacing all of our light bulbs in the house with CFL’s, we do have flourescents in our laundry room and garage, and today, one of the bulbs burned out in the laundry room. I can’t do laundry in the dark, so I headed out to pick up a new bulb.
The first one I bought was too short. It would’ve been very smart of me to get up on the ladder and measure the existing bulb, but I didn’t do that. So, I had to take that one back and exchange it for the right one.
According to Wikipedia, a fluorescent lamp converts electrical power into useful light more efficiently than an incandescent lamp; lower energy costs offsets the higher initial cost of the lamp. Compared with incandescent lamps, fluorescent lamps use less power for the same amount of light, generally last longer, but are bulkier, more complex, and more expensive than a comparable incandescent lamp.
So, I am no longer feeling guilty about not being able to use CFL’s in my laundry room because just like CFL’s, flourescents are also energy savers!
