Nastia Liukin Accepts Silver With Grace

August 19, 2008 on 12:06 pm | In Entertainment, travel | 3 Comments

Nastia Liukin performed beautifully in the individual event finals of the uneven bars at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She had a few small errors, but stuck her landing in a very difficult routine. In fact, her routine had the highest difficulty rating of any routine being done at these Olympics. Her competition, the Chinese women, opted to increase their own routine difficulty ratings in order to be able to compete against her.In the end, another screwy judging scoring system left Nastia tied with her competitor He Kexin which should not have happened. These two gymnasts had identical difficulty ratings, both had small errors in their routines, but He Kexin had several more small errors and took a sideways step on her landing. Remember, Nastia stuck her landing. All things being equal, Nastia should have scored higher. But, this is international gymnastics and all things are apparently not equal. The two gymnasts wound up in a tie.

The International Olympic Committee determined that there would be no ties in gymnastics and the computer is programmed to automatically break the tie by dropping the 4th lowest score, leaving only 3 judges scores remaining to be calculated together. This left Nastia with the Silver medal. There should have never been a tie in the first place.

Nastia Liukin has handled the situation with maturity and grace. Although she was no doubt disappointed, she accepted her medal with a smile, posed for photographs after the awards ceremony and never said an unkind word about the situation. She is certainly a gold medal individual.

Florida Real Estate

August 18, 2008 on 6:57 pm | In Some of This Some of That | 1 Comment

I haven’t been to Florida in almost 30 years, but my memories are enough to make me want to return. I can certainly understand why people choose to retire there. The weather is beautiful and the views are gorgeous. There is a lot to do in Florida too, whether it’s amusement parks, golf or heading to the beach. I do believe they have something for everyone.

My niece is currently living in Florida, stationed there with the U.S. Coast Guard. I’m hoping that before she leaves there we’ll have the opportunity to visit. She is currently renting, but, if she were to stay there permanently, I’m sure she would be looking for a villa for sale in the area. Bardell Real Estate, a specialist in new and resale villas, vacation homes, retirement homes and residential property near Orlando, would certainly be a great help.

Who knows, maybe someday, we’ll buy a retirement home in Florida.

Mrs. Fields to File Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

August 18, 2008 on 6:40 pm | In Finance | 2 Comments

Another company is biting the dust. Well, at least it’s taking that first fateful  step. According to Fox Business News, Cookie maker Mrs. Fields is planning to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Besides owning all the cookie stands inside of malls, Mrs. Fields also owns TCBY yogurt. Personally, I believe TCBY may have been the beginning of their downfall.  TCBY is one of those companies that could be good, but the ones I’ve been inside of in recent years are dirty and have poor customer service.Mrs. Fields is currently $200 million in debt and losing money at a rather rapid pace. While filing Chapter 11 does not necessarily mean that Mrs. Fields will be going out of business, it doesn’t look too good. The company has remained privately owned since its inception in the 1970′s.

Beautiful, Creative Birth Announcements

August 18, 2008 on 12:52 pm | In Family, Some of This Some of That | Comments Off

I wish I had been connected with the internet 12 years ago when my daughter was born. Although I sent out cute little hand written announcements to let everyone know about her arrival, now there are some great online companies to get beautiful and creative Baby Birth Announcements.

Of course, we’re not limited to only birth announcements, custom wedding announcements and personalized holiday cards are also available. I’ve done some photo holiday cards in the past, but I love the creativeness of these.

You are agile, expressive, and precise.
You have the drive to practice until you get something perfectly right.

And you have the confidence to perform difficult moves when under pressure.

Beijing Olympics – Women’s Marathon

Were you watching the Olympics this afternoon? The women’s marathon took place today and, while I’m not a runner, and certainly not a marathoner, even I could appreciate how big of a lead Tomescu Constantina of Romania had for the last several miles. She headed into the Birdnest Stadium over a full minute ahead of any other runner to win the gold medal.

What amazed me even more was that after she crossed the finish line, she continued to run laps around the stadium, carrying the Romanian flag in celebration. What a run!

Crossing the Mississippi

August 15, 2008 on 1:00 am | In travel | Comments Off

Continuing on our road trip, we crossed over the Mississippi River into the state of Tennessee and immediately discovered the beautiful city skyline of Memphis. The interstate wrapped itself around downtown and allowed us to snap a few photos on a beautifully clear Monday morning. It really was a great way to start the second day of our trip, especially because this was going to be a very long day driving.

August 14, 2008 on 8:46 pm | In Entertainment, technology | 1 Comment

If you’ve ever wanted to convert AVI files to MPG files this software is for you.

Blaze Media Pro is an all in one media application that will allow you to convert AVI to MPG among many other things. This software includes conversion, ripping, editing, recording, burning, playback, and yet is easy to use. Beyond the basic features, there are also advanced features that include video capture, video creation, combining, and extraction, video editing, copying of music CDs, audio and video merge, lyrics search, audio tag editing, and more. One of my favorite features is that you can take audio content directly from video and save it as a sound file, or how about taking still images and creating video files, even video editing is available. This software has endless possibilities and supports a multitude of formats.
