A Car – To Have or Not To Have

We were just standing around talking about family and I mentioned that my sister-in-law and her son will be coming for a visit over the 4th of July.  Our nephew is in his mid-20′s and has graduated from college. He has been living and working in San Francisco for the past several years and that’s also where he went to school. He recently decided to pack everything up and move to his mom’s in a Chicago suburb, although, I’m not sure what his plans for the future entail. It’s got to be pretty challenging, believe it or not, he has never driven a car. He doesn’t even have a driver’s license.

In San Fransisco, I believe he rode a bicycle, walked or used public transportation to get around. I’m not sure what he did if he went out on a date. There is a great public transportation in Chicago too, but it really depends on if he gets a job working downtown or not. Out in the suburbs it’s definitely more challenging to be without a vehicle.

Even if you don’t own or don’t immediately plan to own a vehicle, I think a obtaining a driver’s license is important. You just never know when the need to drive might arise. There really aren’t too many places in this country that you can live and get around without owning a car. People think they have to buy new cars, which are expensive, but there are a lot of used cars for sale in sd and all over the country that can be great cars for getting to and from work, etc.

I personally would feel such a loss of independence if I didn’t have a car.   How would you feel not having a car?

  1. Where I live here is Pennsylvania, everything is about 30 minutes away (by car). While I don’t use the car every day, I would be lost w/o it. And stuck here in the sticks, with no where to walk to. Unless you want to walk all day….

  2. Wow! I think he will need to get a license and learn to drive. Or learn to drive and get a license. Yep. In that order. LOL

  3. Lynn – I would feel totally lost without a car. I don’t even like it when I have to put mine in the shop for any reason because it means I’m stuck in one place!

  4. Karen – You’re cracking me up! Yes, he needs to learn to drive and then get his license! Can you imagine having a kid that can’t drive?!

I like your new toy by the way, I bet you’re going to love it.

  5. Wow, I really love this blog, especially the background. I recently had to get rid of my car a, bad gas leak. I hate having to reply on people to take me places. Right now I can’t afford a car let a lone the gas. I wonder if I should purchase a moped or scooter.

  6. I’ve been without a vehicle a couple of times and I really didn’t care for the loss of independence. Even if I’m not going any place, it’s just nice to know that I can if I choose to do so. I also have an electric scooter, but it’s not street legal.
