Band Tryout Update
May 15, 2008 on 7:19 pm | In Family | 2 CommentsThe band director almost forgot to give my daughter her tryout today! I guess she was the only one from her elementary school that was trying out and he simply forgot! Anyway, I was running late due to a doctor’s appointment, so she was able to stay after school and play for him. I think this allowed her to be more relaxed because the other students had left for the day.
The tryout itself wound up being easier than she thought it would be. Of course, with all the practicing she did over the last two days, she was prepared for something more difficult. I say, it’s better to be over prepared! She only had to play three scales and then he opened her own music book to an arbitrary page and had her sight read a piece of music.
The band director told her that she had done very well and, while he couldn’t tell her anything just yet, he felt good about her playing level. We should know something in the next couple of weeks. Please keep your fingers crossed!

What I have found after having one daughter go through 8 years of band and orchestra, and another into the 3rd year, is that MOST kids do not get private lessons. The parents don’t have time, money or can’t be bothered. And the kids view these classes in school as easy classes. Anyone that has had private lessons is way better and way ahead of the rest of the class. Now that is just here in our little school district. Way more emphasis is put on sports, rather that art and music. Anyway, I bet your daughter did great….can’t wait to find out : )

Lynn – I think it’s pretty much the same here. We got lucky when she first started playing, her band director was also her private instructor and he was terrific. No matter how poorly a student played, he found positive things to say.
The emphasis here is also on sports. My daughter plays softball, but that’s not even offered in school until high school. I think band can be a lot of fun and hopefully next year will be just that.
I really do appreciate all of your input. It’s nice hearing from someone who has experienced all of this!
