Sending Flowers In Memorium

May 31, 2008 on 2:14 pm | In Some of This Some of That | No Comments

I just learned that my very dear friend lost her Grandfather. He really was a great man and someone we always enjoyed chatting with at various gatherings. The entire family had always made us feel a part of their family and when his wife passed away several years ago, a part of him went with her. I truly believe that he is in a much better place now and is back with his beloved wife of more than 50 years.

I feel so bad that we’re not there to attend the funeral and pay our respects. It is just too far and too expensive for us to travel back to Illinois. While I was out shopping on Thursday I picked up a sympathy card and mailed it off yesterday. I also went online and ordered same day flower / floral delivery for the viewing. I’m sure my girlfriend will appreciate both and understand why we can’t be there in person.

While I was ordering the flowers, I was looking into the fact that this particular company also provides many other services including grave site maintenance. I think we all like to thing that the cemeteries take care of those things, but it’s not always the case. They also will provide grave site memorial items, something I’d like to do for my Dad’s grave.

Anyway, it’s all something to think about and consider.

A Day of Shopping Therapy

May 29, 2008 on 6:24 pm | In Family, My Imagination | 2 Comments

I’ve felt so cruddy lately that I really haven’t felt like doing anything beyond what is necessary to do.  Today, I decided I was tired of not having any fun and I took myself to the mall to meet my friend for lunch.

We had a great time.  First we had lunch in the food court and then we did some shopping.  I couldn’t believe how much was in the stores that I actually liked.  I wasn’t in the mood to try on clothes, so will leave that for another day.  I did end up getting two pairs of sandals and some lingerie.  I had so much fun that I popped into one of my daughter’s favorite stores and saw quite a bit that I thought she would like.  I’m really likeing the colors this spring/summer.

After picking my daughter up from school, I took her to the mall and she wound up with a new swim suit and a few new tops.  She had as much fun as I did and I think we both needed the retail therapy.  My head still hurts, but I managed to put a smile on my face!  :-D

Hiding In Plain Sight

May 29, 2008 on 9:58 am | In My Imagination | 2 Comments

Have you ever imagined what it must be like to have to hide out in a witness protection program? Maybe I’ve watched too much t.v., but I think it would be pretty scary. I can’t imagine that anyone having to hide like that would ever live anything close to a normal life. I have to think they would always be checking over their shoulder to see if they’ve been discovered. Too nerve wracking for me! I like my calm little life.

USA Network’s new original series In Plain Sight revolves around those in the witness protection program. This great, suspenseful show airs June 1st and I’ll be watching.

Watch my video for clues about where I might be hiding. Leave me a comment if you think you know where I am!

Getting Rid of Stuff

May 29, 2008 on 9:52 am | In Some of This Some of That | No Comments

I did it!  I finally made the call to a local charity and they are coming next week to pick up the sofa that has been sitting in our garage since we moved in a year ago.

This sofa is the one my husband and I purchased for our very first home in 1988, so yes, it’s 20 years old.  I’ve tried to get my husband to get rid of it before now, but he’s been very attached to it.  Finally, when we moved into this house, he realized that it no longer matched our decor.  It’s a lodge pole pine sofa, popular when southwestern decor was in style, not anymore.

The matching loveseat is in my daughter’s playroom, I’m trying to convince him to let that one go too, but it’s a hard battle.

Texas Weather

May 29, 2008 on 8:03 am | In Some of This Some of That | 4 Comments

Once again, the Texas weather has left me wondering why we moved to the Dallas area! The winds and heat have been intense this week. I mentioned in my previous post how hot and humid it was during last night’s softball game, it was absolutely miserable having to sit out in that heat.

It never fails that my husband is out of town when the really bad weather hits. Tuesday was just one of those occasions. It was quite overcast in the morning, but it had been that way just about every morning for the last couple of weeks. By afternoon, the clouds would all be gone and the sun would be shining, heating everything up. Tuesday was the exception. A front moved through our area, coming down from Oklahoma, and it packed a pretty good punch. In less than an hour we received almost 3 inches of rain and the winds were howling. I was very nervous and listened intently for the sirens, which thankfully, never did sound.

In addition to all of the rain and wind, we kept losing power. Initially, it would flicker off and then flicker back on. It was very annoying because it kept knocking out my internet connection! Finally, the power went off and stayed off. I was thankful it was during the day so that there was some light in the house and I didn’t have to hunt around for Surefire new flashlights or candles. We’ve been talking about investing in a good weather radio too. You see, if the power goes out which is seems to do quite a bit, it’s difficult to get weather updates and the weather radio would provide that service.

My husband wanted to move to the south to get away from the snow. I can tell you, there are many days when I’d much rather be dealing with snow than the severe weather conditions we’ve been seeing here!

It’s a Win!

May 29, 2008 on 7:19 am | In Some of This Some of That | 2 Comments

Last night’s fastpitch softball game was not a big nail biter, but I’m glad it’s over and it’s a win for my daughter’s team.  That send them on to the championship game on Saturday morning.

It was so hot last night, I think I was sweating just as much as the players were and I was just sitting in the bleachers.  It was in the 90’s and the humidity was very high, I was so glad when the game ended and I was able to come home and take a shower.

Saturday’s game is going to be tough, I hope the heat isn’t as bad.  We have to win this game or we’re out.  If we win, we have to play the same team a second time on the same day.  It’s a double elimination tournament and that team hasn’t lost a game yet.   It could be a very long day!

Taking Care of Your Teeth

May 28, 2008 on 12:24 pm | In Some of This Some of That | 2 Comments

I realize I have a fear of the dentist, but I have a bigger fear of having dental issues which is why I force myself to go to the dentist every six months. I make sure my daughter also sees the dentist every six months, even more important since she’s now wearing braces on her teeth.

The last time I was at the dentist he asked me if I’d be interested in doing the Invisalign braces, he recommends them for his adult patients. I’m not sure, but I’m thinking that in 2 years, when my daughter’s braces are completed, maybe I wouldn’t mind taking care of my own. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that if your teeth are straight, it’s much easier to take care of them. I do all the regular brushing and flossing in between appointments, but my teeth are crooked so there are places that are harder to get to.

My husband has a bigger fear than I do I think when it comes to the dentist. I think this because I can’t get him to go, not even for a check up. He is of the belief that if he brushes several times a day and uses mouthwash that he doesn’t need to go. So, he waits until something is wrong before he goes, no wonder he doesn’t like to go! A few years ago I even placed a home teeth whitening kit in his Christmas stocking, he’d actually requested it! He used it but I’m not sure he liked it. He’s a little bit vain and didn’t want me to see him wearing the strips on his teeth! I think he needs to try the newer ones, they’re supposed to be less noticeable than the ones I gave him.

I’ve got a few months before my next check up, I think I’m doing a good job of keeping them clean and healthy in the mean time. :-D

Softball Tournament Update

May 28, 2008 on 12:12 pm | In Some of This Some of That | 2 Comments

Last night’s game was rained out, so tonight is the big match up.  To our surprise, the team that advanced is the team that was in last place!  I just have to hope that our girls don’t think this is an easy win and let the game get away from them.

My daughter met with her pitching coach on Saturday and has been working on increasing the speed of her pitch without losing accuracy, not an easy task.  The team had practice Monday evening and worked a lot on base running.  Last time they played this last place team, they almost got beat, so I hope they remember that and come up to the plate swinging!

Are You a Guitar Hero?

May 28, 2008 on 10:49 am | In Some of This Some of That | No Comments

We don’t have this game in our house YET, but I’m sure it’s coming. Guitar Hero™ has to be one of the most popular video games in history. My daughter and I have checked it out in the store, but we’re waiting to upgrade our video game system before we invest in Guitar Hero™. I love how it works though and I can certainly understand why it’s so popular. Last week I saw a certain day time talk show host playing the game on her show with one of her famous guests. It was almost as much fun watching them play as it had to have been for them to actually play it!

ENGOBI, the maker of caffeinated snacks, is hosting a Guitar Hero™ video contest. If you love playing Guitar Hero™, upload a video of yourself or of you and your friends playing the game and you could end up winning some amazing prizes including a customized Fender® Stratocaster, or even an X-Box 360.

Honor Band

May 28, 2008 on 8:52 am | In Family | 5 Comments

My daughter tried out two weeks ago for the Honor Band for 7th grade.  It’s been a long wait, but she learned through a friends brother this morning that she had made the cut!  You see, her friend’s brother attends the junior high now, so he was able to check the posted list and saw both his sister’s name and my daughter’s name on the list.  (I think it would’ve been nice if the band director had also posted or at least notified the 6th graders since they don’t yet attend the junior high).

My daughter is so excited.  She always tries to keep her emotions in check, but I could tell she was happy about it.  She says she’s nervous, but I think she’s going to have so much more fun in band next year.  They will do more performances and more competitions and she loves that stuff!
