Homeschooling for Music

April 10, 2008 on 9:03 am | In Some of This Some of That | No Comments

My daughter has been taking guitar lessons since last July. She meets her instructor at his studio once a week for 30 minutes. It’s about a 20 minute drive each way to and from the studio. In other words, the 30 minute lesson takes up well over an hour of our afternoon.

I’m considering looking into the Amadeus Home Music School as an option. They would provide private lessons in our home at a time that’s convenient for us. This sounds like a good alternative. I will be taking into account the cost of gas for us driving to the guitar studio, in addition to the lesson fees when I request information from them. I’ll let you know!

North Texas Weather

April 10, 2008 on 8:48 am | In Some of This Some of That | No Comments

The weather here in North Texas continues to cause problems.

Last night, more severe storms moved through the area leaving damage to property throughout the area in their wake. There was the usual thunder and lightning as well as extremely high winds and at least one confirmed tornado. The worst part of the storm tracked just north of us, but that didn’t mean we didn’t see damages when we got up this morning. Thankfully nothing happened to our home though, I did walk around the entire outside just to make sure.

On our way to school this morning we saw many wood fences down. Upon arriving at school, we discovered the building had no power which also meant they had no phones. We were told that students didn’t have to attend today and wouldn’t be considered absent if they chose to leave. We waited about 15 minutes and, with no power being restored, I opted to give my daughter the day off.

I’m hoping the worst if over, I need a night of sleep without interruption from the storms and power outages!

Stranded in San Jose

April 10, 2008 on 8:34 am | In Some of This Some of That | 2 Comments

It’s been a very long week, even longer for my husband who left Sunday for a business trip to San Jose. Guess which airline he was on? That’s right, if you said American Airlines, you are correct.

He was originally scheduled to return home yesterday, of course, his flight was among thousands that were canceled. Fortunately, he was able to get a hotel room where he had stayed the previous three nights. What made it so irritating was that AA never bothered to notify their passengers of the cancellations. If they had, they wouldn’t have had hundreds of people lined up in airports all across the country trying to find other flights. Instead, they let people think their flight wouldn’t be canceled, went to the airport, stood in long lines, only to be booked on other AA flights the following day. As we all know, most of today’s AA flights have also been canceled.

I was listening to the news last night and heard that AA was considering canceling flights for today so I quickly called my husband who then called the corporate travel office and booked him on another airline. Although his new flight makes two stops and flies into a different airport in Dallas than the one he departed from, at least we know he will definitely be home today.

While I understand AA’s maintenance issues, they have left their customers in quite a bind. My husband, a Platinum member of AA’s frequent flyer club, could easily have been notified by email of the flight cancellation. Instead, he spent hours at the terminal in line, only to be booked the following day on a flight that was also cancelled. He has lost a full day of work and now questions the solvency and loyalty of American Airlines.

I have to think that it would be easier to get a low cost car rental in Israel with Avis Israel than to get American Airlines to be honest with their customers. I feel fortunate that he had access to his corporate travel office to get him on another airline. Many other travelers remain stranded.
