My husband travels for business quite frequently.  I don’t have a problem with him traveling, it’s the nature of his business.  What I don’t understand is why he has so much difficulty telling someone he can’t meet on a particular day due to a family commitment.

My husband has missed many school functions and performances of our daughter.  I don’t expect him to make it to every little thing, but some things are definitely one time opportunities.  I do my very best to make sure he has these events on his calendar/planner as soon as I know about them.  I do this in the hopes that he can include them in his planning.

Tonight is an example.  Our daughter’s elementary school is holding their open house this evening.  This is the students and teachers opportunity to showcase what they’ve been doing.  The 6th graders have worked hard over the past couple of months writing a research paper on a famous individual from another country.   Our daughter chose a former Emperor of China, the one and only female emperor China has ever had.  Tonight, the 6th graders will be performing as wax figures in a wax museum.  They will, when a button is pushed, give a speech explaining the character they are portraying.  It’s really a very cool thing.

My husband won’t be here.  He is currently out of town and will arrive home one hour after the event has ended.

Tomorrow night, our daughter is playing her guitar, along with her guitar instructor, in a public concert.  This is an amazing event for our daughter because she has only been playing guitar for about 8 months.  She’s doing so well that her instructor asked her to play.

My husband informed me yesterday that he was asked to extend his business trip through Friday.  He told me that he had to come up with some excuse as to why he couldn’t stay and told them he couldn’t change his flight because nothing was available, a lie.  What I don’t understand is why he can’t just say “I have a family commitment and can’t extend my trip this time”.  Why is he embarrassed or uncomfortable letting anyone he does business with know that his family is a priority to him?
