Would You Like to be 150?

March 31, 2008 on 10:18 am | In Some of This Some of That | No Comments

I feel very fortunate to have been born into a family that has a tendency to live long lives. My grandmother lived to be 96 and her sister was 99. Not only do our family genes indicate that we may live to be nearly 100, but our genes lean toward younger looking skin, healthy hearts and mostly cancer free. I feel very fortunate to be in this family.

How about you? How old would you like to live to be?

I’ve heard that Barbara Walters will soon be airing a special on “living to 150″. Now, I’m not sure that I want to live that long, I guess it would certainly depend on my health. I don’t want to be immobile or mentally incapacitated, that to me, wouldn’t truly e living. I will be interested to hear what Dr. David Sinclair has to say about his U.S. Lab Tested Resveratrol when he is interviewed by Barbara Walters. Dr. Sinclair discovered Resveratrol as the most potent activator of the SIRT1 Gene. It is becoming known for it’s potential in fighting cancer, viral infections, and the effects of diabetes, as well as age-related illnesses such as Alzheimer’s and arthritis.

I believe the product has some interesting potential in helping all of us to lead longer, healthier lives. I will be tuning in to see what Barbara finds out from Dr. Sinclair and will be waiting for FDA information as well.

We’ve Got a Visitor!

March 31, 2008 on 7:11 am | In My Imagination | No Comments

I’m very happy to say that my Mom arrived late last night after driving for two days from Arizona!

My Mom currently resides in both AZ and Indiana.  Since we moved to Dallas last year, we are the new mid-way stop (sort of) on her route between the two.  I’m just happy she is here, even if I’m not sure she’ll make that particular drive again!

She arrived very late and so I’m not sure what time I’ll be seeing her this morning, we have no plans today other than letting her sleep in.  My daughter is off to school and husband is at work, so it’s just us and the dogs.  Yes, she her little shi-tzu is with her, the cutest little dog ever!

Anyway, I spent the last couple of days cleaning house, so, other than doing some laundry this morning, my time is free and I’m heading to my sewing room.  Hope everyone has a great day!  :-D

The Last Whale

March 30, 2008 on 4:35 pm | In Some of This Some of That | No Comments

As long as I can remember, hunting whales has been very controversial. Personally, I believe whales should be protected as should their environment. Having lived in Southern California, I can tell you that there is nothing more beautiful than seeing the fluke of a whale out in the ocean. I’m not really comfortable on boats and I can say that upon returning to shore I had to ask We went out there? I must also tell you, it was well worth the trip. These truly are magnificent creatures.

This fall, Freemantle press of Australia will be publishing the book “The Last Whale” which documents the war for the whales. As a result of this campaign in the late 1970’s, Australia became an international advocate for the whales. Be on the lookout for this special book in September, 2008.

Why Can’t I Sleep?

March 30, 2008 on 5:31 am | In My Imagination | No Comments

Last night, I was visiting one of my favorite blogs, and I read the author’s latest post Insomnia Stinks and it really hit home. There have been so many nights when I find myself just tossing and turning, unable to sleep. It truly is not a good feeling and the result is feeling so tired during the day that being productive becomes questionable.

I was so tired last night when I went to bed. I attempted to do some reading but couldn’t keep my eyes open to focus on the words. I closed the book, turned off the light, and attempted to sleep. I laid there for about an hour before finally falling asleep. Unfortunately, by then, it was around 11:30.

I slept fairly well until around 5 a.m. Then, I started the tossing and turning again. I finally just got up. I feel so tired. My eyes are watering because they’re tired and want to be closed. I would love to be asleep, but it’s pointless to lay in bed. So, here I sit.

It’s now 6:30 and Sleepless in Seattle is coming on television, how appropriate!

What do you do when you can’t sleep?

Birth Announcement Etiquette

March 28, 2008 on 8:17 am | In Some of This Some of That | 6 Comments

I have a question, and perhaps one or more of my readers can weigh in on this with either an answer, or at least their opinion.

When a baby is born, is it no longer the proper thing to do to send out birth announcements?

My daughter is 12 years old and I know one thing we did when getting ready for her arrival was to select birth announcements. Most of these are so easy to send out and can be pretty much made ready to go before the baby is born. The only unknown is the actual date, time, birth weight and length which can all be filled in after the birth. It’s really not difficult and is a tradition that I believe should carry on.

I ask the question because no birth announcements were ever mailed out on the last two babies born into our family. For me personally, the birth announcement serves not only as a way of announcing the birth, but also as a way for me to remember future birthdays. And let’s face it, parents are so excited and proud when that baby arrives, I can’t understand why they wouldn’t want to announce it! For example, my step-daughter had her baby last summer and no birth announcement was ever sent. I realize she is less traditional than I am, but I honestly can’t tell you our grandchild’s birthday!

Even if the parents aren’t traditional, there are so many cute announcements available. If photo birth announcements had been as easily available 12 years ago, I think I would have gone this route. They are so cute, and who doesn’t like a baby picture? I mean, check this out, is this not cute?!

Please let me know what you think. Have you received birth announcements for your friends and relatives who’ve had babies? I’m just curious.

Celebrity Apprentice

March 27, 2008 on 8:42 pm | In My Imagination | No Comments

Have you been watching The Celebrity Apprentice? We’re watching the 2 hour season finale right now, it’s really difficult to say which one will win, Trace or Pierce.

Pierce has definitely won more money for charity over the course of the 12 week show, but Trace has everything else going for him.  Pierce played dirty, was sometimes abusive and usually, just downright rude.  He did get the job done though.

Trace did everything politely and creatively.  He had some really amazing ideas during the 12 weeks and really helped his team win several challenges.  It’s going to be interesting to see who Donald Trump declares as the winner.  I’m hoping it’s Trace Adkins.

Buying Outdoor Sporting Goods

March 26, 2008 on 10:57 am | In Some of This Some of That | No Comments

I personally don’t know a lot about outdoor sports products, but I do know that, as with anything else, you get what you pay for. I know my brother-in-law in Indiana occasionally goes deer hunting and I’m wondering if he utilizes Deer Hunting Blinds when he does or what supplies he uses. I also know that he shops for quality products, whether it’s something for hunting or something for the house.

I’m going to recommend he take a look at H&R Business Mall where they sell quality outdoor sporting goods. They ship factory direct which adds value to the product selection.

I realize it’s several months before deer season, but that will allow him time to shop!

Dental Success

March 25, 2008 on 10:32 am | In Family Health, Some of This Some of That | 3 Comments

I did it! I’m finally done with the dentist… at least for another six months!

After a miserable night of sleep, I managed to drag my butt off to the dentist this morning for my teeth cleaning. I have to tell you, this dentist is very punctual. This was my second visit and my daughter also saw them last week. All three times we were taken in right on time.

Anyway, I’m done. My teeth have been x-rayed, scraped and polished. I have nice fresh breath and I can finally relax. Now, if I could just convince my husband to go…

Off to the Dentist, Again

March 24, 2008 on 5:14 pm | In Family Health, My Imagination | No Comments

I have a true fear of the dentist, that’s right, it’s pure fear.

So, what happens? I go to a new dentist for my check up appointment last week, I have all the x-rays done and the dentist checks my gums and informs me that my teeth and gums are all healthy. Okay, I should be able to relax, but no, I have to come back for my cleaning. I guess because I was a new patient, they split my check up into two appointments!

Okay, I can deal with it, the worst part is over and I’ve all ready been told that I don’t have any cavities, so fine. This morning I get up before the sun comes up, get in the shower and am all ready beginning to stress because I have an 8 a.m. appointment for my cleaning. At 7:05, the dentist office calls to say the hygienist had a family emergency and I would have to reschedule for tomorrow.

Well, crap! Now I have to go through the whole fear factor feeling tomorrow morning, again.

To put this in perspective, there are only two people I know of who have a bigger fear of the dentist then I do. The first is my sister. Like me though, she forces herself to go because she knows that without proper maintenance care, the problems could be worse and much more painful later. The second person is my own husband. It has been about 10 years since the last time he set foot in a dental office and then it was while he was on a business trip and had to have an emergency root canal! You’d think that he would’ve learned from that experience to not let dental care go so long between visits!

I’ve been planting the idea of him going, telling him how great this dental office is. I have to say, even I give the office credit for punctuality with appointments (except when they are cancelled) and making sure the patient is comfortable. My daughter even got to watch a movie while her teeth were being cleaned. It’s not like I’m asking him to take Tadalafil or something, I’m just asking him to visit the dentist, after all, it’s covered by our insurance.

Jesus Knocking

March 23, 2008 on 6:52 am | In Family, My Imagination | No Comments

JESUS KNOCKING ~

A nurse on the pediatric ward, before listening to the little ones’ chests,
would plug the stethoscope into their ears and let them listen to their
own hearts. Their eyes would always light up with awe. But she never
got a response to equal four-year-old David’s.

Gently he tucked the stethoscope in his ears and placed the disk over
his heart. “Listen,” she said, “What do you suppose that is?”
He drew his eyebrows together in a puzzled line and looked up as if
lost in the mystery of the strange tap-tap-tapping deep in his chest.
Then his face broke out in a wondrous grin. “Is that Jesus knocking?”

Listen to your heartbeat.
Listen for the knock of Jesus upon the door of your heart.

~Whisper Jesus~
Today I got a burden
And I felt that I should pray
For God’s spirit seemed to tell me
That you needed prayer today

I don’t know what the problem is
I sure do know the cure
And if you’ll only let Him
God will keep you safe and secure

In life there’s always problems
Cropping up to spoil our day
My friend you know the answer
All you have to do is pray

If you still feel you’re defeated
And you want to run and hide
Just reach out and I’ll be there
Right there by your side

Remember, Whisper “Jesus”
For He is just a prayer away
He’s so close that you can touch Him
All you have to do is pray

I wish a very Happy Easter to all of me readers (yes, all 4 of you!).
