Valentine’s Day Decorating

February 14, 2008 on 1:28 pm | In Some of This Some of That | No Comments

Do you decorate your home for Valentine’s Day? I see many homes with heart in the windows, but I don’t really see much else. Perhaps it’s because many of us just recently got all of our Christmas decorations taken down and put away. I for one don’t have the desire to do all that again so soon, do you?

Speaking of holiday decorations, the final items to be taken down after Christmas were all of the lights, both inside the house, on the tree, and those outside in the bushes and on the deck railing. I can’t get over how many strands of lights we own, we probably spent a couple hundred dollars on buying lights this year and our goal is to add more each year. I’m hoping that with the new LED lights, we won’t have to buy so many replacement strands each year and can just add to what we all ready have.

Now, what do you with those light strands that don’t work anymore. Obviously we could just toss them in the trash, that would be the easiest answer. But, with all of us trying to be more green and eco-friendly, it’s nice to know that there is a Christmas light recycling program available. HolidayLEDs.com had originally planned to only accept LED lights for recycling through the end of January, but they’ve had such an enormous response to their program that they’ve decided to recycle holiday lights indefinitely, as long as people continue to participate. If the fact that this program has all ready processed over 3,000 pounds of lights is any indication, this recycling program will be going on for a long while!

So, if you do find yourself with strands of LED lights that no longer work, don’t just throw them away, get them recycled!

Caring for the Elderly

Following the death of my father-in-law 2 years ago, my husband and I have been trying to keep an eye on my mother-in-law and make sure she is handling her finances okay. She is not to good with her paperwork and it helps if we keep an eye on what’s going on.

It’s not always easy though because she lives in California and we live in Texas. Thank goodness for telephones and the internet! We’ve worked on everything from her local cell phone service to comparing San Jose car insurance on vehicles. It just helps us sleep better at night knowing that she’s getting the best deals while living on a fixed income.

I’m Siddhartha?

February 14, 2008 on 8:00 am | In My Imagination | No Comments

Tammie led me to this very interesting book quiz. While you’ll have to go visit her site to see what book she is, I can tell you, it’s a book I actually know the story. Mine on the other hand, while I’ve heard of it, I can’t say that I’ve read it or know what the story is about. Oh well, maybe I need to get myself down to the library!

You’re Siddhartha!

by Hermann Hesse

You simply don’t know what to believe, but you’re willing to try
anything once. Western values, Eastern values, hedonism and minimalism, you’ve spent
some time in every camp. But you still don’t have any idea what camp you belong in.
This makes you an individualist of the highest order, but also really lonely. It’s
time to chill out under a tree. And realize that at least you believe in
ferries.
