Band Choices
February 3, 2008 on 8:33 am | In Family | 2 CommentsIt’s difficult for me to believe, but my daughter must turn in her elective choices for Jr. High by this coming Thursday. This is playing havoc on me, I want my little girl to remain a little girl, but there’s nothing I can do about it. I have to face reality, she is growing up.
One of her elective choices, of course, is band. I have been very concerned about band in this school district. As I’ve said before, the schools don’t even start band here until 6th grade and even then, they limit what instruments students can play. My daughter has been so incredibly bored in band all of this year. Last week, I hired a private lesson teacher who pulls my daughter out of band class, once a week for 30 minutes, to work with her on more advanced lessons than what is being taught in class. My daughter is very thankful for this and glad to continue learning on her baritone.
I have learned, to my relief, that in Jr. High, there are actually three different bands my daughter can choose from. There is the basic school band, designed for second year band students to continue learning their instruments. There is also a symphony band, also for second year students, but of a bit higher caliber. This band will play several concerts during the school year as well as possibly a competition or two. The third band is the Honors Band. This is the one my daughter wants to be in. This is the only one of the three that students have to audition for. I have no doubt that my daughter will succeed in getting into the Honors Band. This band plays at football games, pep rallies, concerts and does various band and solo competitions.
I’m not exactly sure yet when the auditions for Honors Band will be held, I understand a packet of information will be coming home in the not to distant future. In the mean time, my husband and I will be attending a meeting put on by the Jr. High counselors to help parents understand the registration process for Jr. High as well as the Advanced Placement program. We will attend that on Tuesday of this week.
Updates as they come!
