Bald Eagles Die In Alaska

19 Bald Eagles died in Kodiak, Alaska yesterday. Apparently, a truck loaded with fish guts was left parked, uncovered, outside a fish packing plant. The truck was swarmed by over 50 eagles. They gorged and while doing so, their bodies and feathers become saturated and soiled, so much so that they were unable to fly. Some, trying to escape, actually sank into the guts and suffocated. Others froze to death when the temperatures dropped into the teens.

Those birds who did survive were washed down with soap and water and taken to a heated fish and wildlife warehouse to recover. They’ll be release as soon as they are strong enough.

This is the saddest story I heard today. I wanted to share it because I think it’s important to realize that this was a senseless loss of beautiful creatures. If only the driver of the truck had put the cover on.

  1. That is so sad. I wonder if the driver was jailed. I am sure it would be a law that he should have a cover.

  2. They haven’t said anything yet about liability, but the company that the fish guts came from also hasn’t said anything.

  3. Wow. I hope enough people hear about this to force the company/the driver/everyone else to do something and make sure it never happens again. This is so sad. But thank goodness some of the birds could be saved from the thoughtlessness and carelessness.

  5. I agree, this was a senseless act of neglect in my opinion. It made the National headlines yesterday, but I haven’t heard anything more about it so far today.

  6. I hope the government takes action also. This was not a natural act, this was a man made disaster that could have easily been avoided.

  7. I hate it when I read about things like this. Why do people act so carelessly? Especially when all they had to do was put the cover on.
